New Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 story trailer hints at how Peter was taken over by Venom
Without a warning, Insomniac set the panel on fire with a new story trailer for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. From the first gameplay reveal at the PlayStation showcase in May, we all know that Peter Parker was taken over by Venom, but we had no clue how it happened. The new story trailer now gives us a clue it might have had something to do with his trip with Harry.
“At the beginning of our story, our Spider-Men are at the top of their game,” said Jon Paquette, senior narrative director. “But both Peter Parker and Miles Morales are struggling with their personal lives. Miles is trying to find time to write his college entrance essay, but he keeps procrastinating and focusing on Spider-Work instead.”
The arrival of Kraven and his hunters in the city sparks a new wave of violence that makes everyone question why they were there and what or who they were hunting. As the Spider-Men and MJ dig deeper into Kraven’s motivations, the symbiote which has infested Peter begins to threaten their relationship and everything dear to them.
During the first gameplay trailer reveal, we saw how the symbiote gave Peter new abilities. However, it also changed his personality and strained his relationship with Miles. The new Spider-Man 2 story trailer shows that MJ is also feeling the heat from Peter’s new identity. Spider-Man 2 will launch on October 20, 2023.
Spider-Man 2 will feature new abilities and an expanded world
Watching the gameplay trailer, one of the things that thrilled fans of Spider-Man 2 was the new skills that Peter displayed, including a mind-blowing quadruple slam. PlayStation met with Bryan Intihar, the senior creative director at Insomniac Games for further explanations.
“We’ve always thought of our Spider-Heroes as ‘acrobatic improvisors’, and in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, we wanted to equip them with new ways to do so during combat,” said Intihar. “This includes Pete’s Spider-Arms and Symbiote powers, while Miles now brings two forms of bioelectric Venom to every fight. When you start combining these abilities with all-new Spider-Gadgets like the Web Grabber, it can lead to some exciting combos,”
It’s not only Peter and Miles’ skills that have got an expansion. Marvel’s New York has also been expanded too. Fans of the game can now take their swinging exploration across the East River to Queens and Brooklyn. A new area called Coney Island debuted in the trailer—and would be fun to explore.
Apart from swinging around Marvel’s New York City, Spider-Man 2 will get a new fun way of exploration called Web Wings. Ryan Smith, the senior game director at Insomniac shed more light on this cool new feature that will debut in the upcoming game.

“We are really excited for people to try out the Web Wings,” said Smith. “For us, it was a cool opportunity to bring something people have seen in comics and movies and integrate it into the game. Swinging is the core of our Spider-Man traversal, so we designed the Web Wings to work with swinging and complement it. That way you can weave back and forth between the two to build up speed and height.”
Fans rally to see the face behind their favorite villain
One of the characters that amazed fans in the Spider-Man 2 gameplay reveal was Venom. The actor behind the voice was Tony Todd who’s famous for his role in the horror movie Candyman. Intihar mentioned that during the studio’s search for the right voice for Venom, they came across Todd’s audition tape.
“Everything we talked about Venom—that sense of strength, that sense of fear, that sense of overwhelming, so different from Peter—Todd embraces that completely in the performance,” said Intihar.
Before heading to San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H, senior art director Jacinda Chew and senior narrative director Jon Paquette all sat with EW to discuss the creation of the new monstrous design of Venom for Spider-Man 2.

“Our Venom was inspired by the comics, but there have been so many interpretations that it was fun to pick and choose what fits the game,” Chew explained further at SDCC. “He has a unique take on the white spider icon and has the anatomy of a human. He also has powerful tendril attacks that can take many forms.”
Intihar revealed that Spider-Man 2 is set 9 to 10 months after the first game with Miles and Peter trying to figure out their lives. Todd was also present at the SDCC to promote the game as well as to share his experience of playing Spider-Man 2’s supervillain.
“I get a call from insomniac to test drive Venom,” Todd said at SDCC. “It’s been the most exciting voice-acting journey I’ve had to date. Venom was fun to do. I wanted to make sure there was a joyous quality in his destruction. I wanted a sense of joy and tenacity and deliciousness!”
Spider-Man 2 will get a limited PS5 console and controller
PlayStation has a way of making its exclusives come alive with a limited-edition PS5 console. They did the same with God of War Ragnarok and are set to do the same with Spider-Man 2. They even released a trailer for it.
In the trailer, the PS5 console was entirely covered with the symbiote but Miles was able to disperse it using his bioelectric shock. The limited edition PS5 console bundle comes with a PS5 cover that shows the symbiote trying to engulf the red Spider-Man logo.
The DualSense controller that comes with the bundle will also be customized. It features the Spider-Man logo centered on the touchpad. The color will shift from black to red showing the symbiote’s progressive consumption of the classic Spider-Man.
If you already have a PS5 and don’t fancy purchasing a new one, it will interest you to know that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 limited edition accessories can be purchased separately including the Spider-Man 2 branded DualSense controller and the game’s limited edition PS5 console cover. The price of the accessories is not yet revealed.
The sale of the PS5 console bundles and accessories will start on September 1, 2023. Pre-orders will begin on July 28th. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Collector’s Edition is also on sale. You can get it from PlayStation Store for $229.99. It comes with a 19-inch Spider-Man Peter Parker, Spider-Man Miles Morales, and Venom statue—which was revealed for the first time at SDCC.
