A few days after the release of Spider-Man 2, Sony reported that it was the fastest-selling PlayStation Studio game in history. The game sold 2.5 million copies globally in just 24 hours. New data shared in the company’s financial report showed that the game sold over 5 million copies in 10 days.
The report covered sales of the game up to October 30. Spider-Man 2 was released on October 20, 2023, as a PlayStation 5 exclusive. On Metacritic, the game garnered an average score of 90 from 143 critical reviews, making it one of the highest-scoring games on the platform this year.
The last game that Sony referred to as its fastest-selling after launch was God of War: Ragnarök. The November 2022 release sold 5.1 million copies in its debut week. However, Sony did not provide the sales figure for the first 24 hours.

Although Sony now claims that Spider-Man 2 is its fastest-selling game, putting God of War: Ragnarök and Spider-Man 2 sales numbers side-by-side, it is hard to reconcile that tag. If God of War: Ragnarök sold 5.1 million copies in 7 days, it clearly outpaced Spider-Man 2 which sold 5 million units in 10 days. It is hard to make a direct comparison since the period under review is rarely the same.
Perhaps, Sony has other metrics they use for rating their game sales performance that are not made public. Another logical argument may be that “fastest selling” has become yet another marketing term used to create hype around new releases.
The use of those words tends to create a FOMO effect that sways people who may normally not care to jump on the train. This argument will start to make sense if you look at the last five PlayStation exclusive releases. Each successive release has been tagged “fastest selling”.
For example, before God of War: Ragnarök, Sony also called The Last of Us Part 2 its fastest-selling game, saying the game sold over 4 million copies in 72 hours after release. Right before that, the first Spider-Man game was given that tag after it sold 3.3 million copies in the first three days after it was released.
Spider-Man 2 was voted October’s best new game
Regardless of the metrics that Sony uses to determine its “fastest selling” games, nothing takes away the fact that Spider-Man 2 has won the hearts of many gamers. In a recent blog post, Sony revealed that the game was voted by players as the best October release on PlayStation.
“The Super Hero sequel Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 webbed up enough fan votes to become the Player’s Choice of October,” announced O’Dell Harmon Jr., a content communications specialist at Sony Interactive Entertainment. “Congrats to Insomniac Games!”.
Player’s Choice is an initiative by Sony where at the end of every month a poll is created for players to vote for their best new game released that month. Voting lasts for a few days and the result is tallied to determine the winner. Some of the top Players’ Choice winners will be showcased on the PlayStation Store throughout the year.
There are no voting criteria. However, Harmon said, “If you were only able to recommend one new release to a friend that month, which would it be?” This question should be at the back of your mind when making your pick.
According to Harmon, remasters and remakes will not qualify to be put up for votes. However, “larger-scale rebuilds and remakes like Shadow of Colossus and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy will”. The final list of games put up for votes is decided by the PlayStation editorial teams.
