Split Fiction developed by Hazelight Studios is Metacritic’s highest-rated game of 2025 yet. Its rating has trumped popular releases like Monster Hunter Wilds and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.

At the time of writing, Split Fiction had an average Metascore of 92 on PC and Xbox Series X and 91 on PS5. This means that it has become Hazelight’s highest-rated game to date. In contrast, It Takes Two which was released in 2021 had a Metascore of 89 on PC, PS4, and Xbox Series X, 88 on PS5, and 82 on Nintendo Switch.

Compared to other “Universal Acclaim” that has released this year, Monster Hunter Wilds had an average score of 90 on PS5 and Xbox Series X and 88 on PC while Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 had an average of 88 on PC and Xbox Series X and 87 on PS5.

Going by the Metacritic score, Split Fiction is already a strong contender for Game of the Year. Recall that It Takes Two won the award at the 2021 The Game Awards and also bagged the Golden Joystick for Best Multiplayer Game.

However, it is still too early to say considering the long list of high-profile titles with a 2025 release window. In an interview last week, Josef Fares, Hazelight’s founder and director, joked that the only reason why Split Fiction will not win the Game of the Year is if GTA 6 is released.

Split Fiction is a co-op only split-screen follow-up to It Takes Two. The story centers on two new characters/authors Mio and Zoe who are trapped in their own stories and must work together to exit.

Split Fiction is published by Electronic Arts and launches on March 6, 2025, for $49.99. With Friend Pass, one player can own the game and invite their friend to play with them.
