Star Wars: Republic Commando is almost two decades old
Star Wars: Republic Commando is not really a 2023 release. In fact, the game first debuted as an Xbox original exclusive in March 2005. Subsequently, in the same month, it was introduced to PC. However, an HD port for PS4 and Nintendo Switch was only released in 2021.
“Boss, Fixer, Scorch, and Sev, better known as Delta Squad, are back on Nintendo Switch! Relive the legendary campaign,” said an official blurb of the game on the Nintendo eShop. “Welcome to the Clone Wars: Chaos has erupted throughout the galaxy. As the leader of an elite squad of Republic Commandos, your mission is to infiltrate, dominate, and ultimately annihilate the enemy.
Battle a variety of highly intelligent and deadly enemies—from brutal Trandoshan mercenaries to the flying insectoid warriors of Geonosis. Your squad will follow your orders, performing complex commands and strategic maneuvers. You are their leader. They are your weapon.”
When it was first released, Metacritic scored the game 78. While this is not the best score a game has ever received from Metacritic, it was still pretty solid. In the modern era, Star Wars: Republic Commando is still viewed as a cult classic.
Star Wars: Republic Commando remains at the forefront of tactical gameplay
Star Wars: Republic Commando is a first-person shooter developed by LucasArts. In the single-player campaign, the players will take the role of RC-1138, the leader of the squad, and try to complete different missions during the Clone Wars.
As the leader, the player can issue commands to the other three non-playable characters (Fixer, Scorch, and Sev). The majority of the objects in the environment will highlight when the crosshair is placed over them. The player can then dish out an order that is associated with the object.
The diversity of the orders issued was one of the features of the game that got fans going. From ordering squadmates to move to secure positions to asking them to assume different attacking positions all made the game a tactical masterpiece.
The majority of the criticisms of the game were centered around the short duration and average multiplayer. Also, the arsenal is quite limited—including a blaster pistol with unlimited ammo.
