Starfield was Bethesda Game Studios’ first new IP in over three decades. Although the game faced technical issues when it was launched and needed multiple patches to become ‘enjoyable’, ex-Bethesda’s lead designer Bruce Nesmith said the challenges would help make the franchise “one hell of a game” in the future.

Ex-Bethesda Designer Said Starfield 2 Will Be “One Hell Of A Game”

Nesmith who left the studio in 2021 to write books (like Mischief Maker and Glory Seeker) made the comment during an interview with VideoGamer. According to the former designer, Starfield laid a strong foundation for a future sequel.

Nesmith compared Starfield to other franchises like Assassin’s Creed and Mass Effect where the first game in the franchise had rough edges but the sparks of brilliance they had were carried into the sequels.

“I’m looking forward to Starfield 2,” Nesmith said. “I think it’s going to be one hell of a game because it’s going to address a lot of the things people are saying, ‘We’re quite there. We’re missing a little bit.’ It will be able to take what’s in there right now and put in a lot of new stuff and fix a lot of those problems.”

“If you look at the first Dragon Age, the first Assassin’s Creed, the first game in a lot of IPs, they tend to show off flashes of brilliance amid a lot of other things that don’t quite catch everybody’s eye. No, they’re not quite as hot and popular. It takes, sadly, sometimes a second or third to version of the game in order to really enrich everything.”

Starfield received generally favorable reviews, grabbing a Metascore of 85 on PC and 83 on Xbox Series X. The first story expansion for the game, Shattered Space, was released on September 30. However, its reception was worse than the base game with a Metascore of 62 on PC and 59 on Xbox Series X.
