Steam just announced the launch of a new recording feature for users called Game Recording. The feature which was previously in beta is now available to all players. However, you can do more than just record your gameplay with the new feature.

With Steam’s Game Recording, players can record, replay, clip, and share files directly from Steam. Players can save their recorded clips, export the video files, send them to other devices, send them to their phone, or create a share link that they can share with their friends.

The Record in Background feature will allow Steam to “automatically record your gameplay when you start playing, so you don’t miss those unexpected moments”. When players choose this feature, the last 120 minutes of the video will be kept in a temporary format for the player to replay or save as permanent clips.

Alternatively, players can choose the “Record Manually” feature. When players choose this feature, they will need to activate the recording feature when they launch their gameplay. The shortcut to do that is Ctrl+F11.

Players can set the recording duration and quality levels for individual titles including setting “Do not record” and “infinite recording” options. This feature works with any game, as long as the game allows the Steam Overlay to run—including non-Steam games.

Another important feature of the Steam Recording feature is that it records only the game and not the desktop. According to the company, the Game Recording feature “minimizes CPU usage of video encoding by using the dedicated video encoding hardware of your AMD or Nvidia GPUs”.
