RiME and GLYT maker Tequila Works has announced a significant restructuring that will lead to the layoff of a small number of employees and the cancelation of an unannounced game. The Madrid-based studio disclosed the changes on Tuesday through a post on LinkedIn.
“With deep regret, we must inform of the decision to cancel an unannounced game,” wrote the studio in the post which hit many as a surprise. “This tough decision means we will be restructuring the studio to concentrate on the development of only one game.”

“These changes will have an impact to a small number of roles at the studio. This is an incredibly difficult time, and our focus is to provide the support and guidance to those affected.”
The announcement is a reminder that the industry is not out of the woods yet. Although the studio did not explicitly mention the number of staff impacted by the restructuring, GameBaba Universe found at least four people associated with the company that have now added the infamous #OpenToWork green banner to their profile pictures.
The profiles we spotted include a junior tools programmer, a 3D environment artist, a software engineer, and a senior multiplayer programmer. We cannot say if these four were the only ones impacted by the studio’s restructuring program. Interestingly, no former employee has posted about being laid off too.
Tequila Works was founded in 2009 with the philosophy, “creating things with gusto”. It is promoted as a “boutique studio that unites tradition and creativity”. Their development roster includes RiME, The Invisible Hours, The Sexy Brutale, GYLT, Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son, Deadlight and Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story which was released last year.
Tequila Works is unique for operating a flexible working environment that embraces remote employees and those who prefer to work at the studio which according to the studio “benefits work-life balance”.
