The Elder Scrolls: Castles from Bethesda Softworks is now live on mobile. However, the talking point has been how quietly the game was released without fanfare. At the time of writing this post, the game only had over 1K downloads, although information under the game showed that it was updated on September 27, 2023.
Considering the size of The Elder Scrolls fan base, we reckon that the number of downloads would have been higher if more people knew about its availability. However, there is a catch. This is just an early access and it appears only people within America can download the game.
In The Elder Scrolls: Castles, you won’t be playing as a brave adventurer who’s exploring dungeons and killing goblins. Rather, in the mobile game you will take the role of different kings and queens and rule over their royal castles and dynasties. This includes collecting resources (like wood) and making thoughtful decisions that can make or mar the peace in your kingdom.

“From Bethesda Game Studios, the award-winning developer behind Skyrim and Fallout Shelter, comes The Elder Scrolls: Castles—a new mobile game that puts you in control of your very own castle and dynasty,” read the game’s description on Play Store. “Oversee your subjects as the years come and go, families grow, and new rulers take the throne.”
The Elder Scrolls: Castles is similar to Fallout Shelter where players must expand their castles room-by-room while trying to stay on top of the demands of their subjects. The game also features a questing element where players can create and equip heroes with gears and send them into battles against foes that should look familiar to fans of the Elder Scrolls franchise.
A battle success rewards the player with valuable loot that can be used to expand their kingdom. As your kingdom grows, it becomes tougher to maintain order and keep your subjects happy—but that is where the fun begins.
What are the consequences of grumbling subjects in The Elder Scrolls: Castles
The growth of discontent among your subjects will come with assassination plots. The success of that will depend on how many of your subjects are against you. The release is coming on the heels of a leak (thanks to the FTC vs. Microsoft case) that revealed that Bethesda was working on various free-to-play mobile games.
Many of the games in the leak had their working titles or were unnamed. Perhaps, The Elder Scrolls: Castles is one of the games in the company’s roster. Also, it is important to mention that the game is not currently available on Apple Store.

As you might have already figured out, The Elder Scrolls: Castles is a castle simulation game where you will build your kingdom from the ground up. Although it is a lot similar to Fallout Shelter, they are two distinct games.
A peek at The Elder Scrolls: Castles gameplay
In case you are yet to play The Elder Scrolls: Castles, we will give you a rundown of what you should expect. Set in a mysterious region of Tamriel, The Elder Scrolls: Castles begins with the killing of your father who was the king and you (the prince) take over as the new king—and immediately start making tough decisions.
As we mentioned earlier, the goal of the game is to keep expanding your castle. During that expansion, you will have to create more rooms to accommodate more people. In addition to expanding the rooms in your castle, you also have to create accessory rooms like a furnace where iron ingots will be created or kitchens where food will be made. However, how you go about your construction is strictly up to you.

Your subjects will approach you with problems like they found something and want to know if they can keep it. Every subject has a meter that shows if they are happy or sad. How happy or sad they will be will depend on how you relate with them.
One thing we found interesting is that you can replace people who are not happy with you. Also, people age in The Elder Scrolls: Castles which means that eventually, every king or queen dies and is replaced by their child. Also, every child will eventually grow to become either an adventurer, a worker, or a ruler.
The Elder Scrolls: Castles’ in-game purchases are still fuzzy. Zack Zwiezen of Kotaku who was one of the few to enroll in the early access was unable to make purchases in the store. However, all that will definitely change once the game is officially launched.
