Animal-themed games have always been part of video game history. From Duck Hunt on Famcom to Sonic the Hedgehog on Sega, animal-themed games provide a respite from the rush of modern gaming. Stray, the lost cat game, changed how I viewed animal-themed games. So, when I heard about The Spirit and the Mouse, I was eager to have a bite.
As you may already be able to decipher from the name, The Spirit and the Mouse is a game that allows gamers to assume the personality of a mouse. The game was developed by Alblune and published by Armor Games Studios.

It was first released on September 26, 2022, on PC via Steam. Those that access games through Steam should be familiar with the game already. In a twist of excitement, The Spirit and the Mouse was released on PS4 and PS5 on July 20, 2023. But, what exactly makes me excited about this game?
What is the story of The Spirit and the Mouse?
The Spirit and the Mouse is a rather unorthodox story about a mouse that goes around doing good. This challenges what many people know about these little furry creatures that are often associated with the destruction of things around the house—and even serving as a vector for deadly viral diseases like Lassa Fever.
The Spirit and the Mouse allow gamers to play as Lila in a rainy night’s adventure that will see the furry creature navigate through the relaxed village of Sainte-et-Claire and bring happiness and light to the people.
“Bring kindness and light to the people of Sainte-et-Claire as Lila—a tiny mouse with a big heart,” read the official game description. “Explore a quaint French village, make electrifying new friends, and do good deeds for those in need in this lush narrative adventure game”.

It all began when Lila climbed an antenna on a roof of a building. There was a thunderstorm and a bolt of lightning struck the antenna Lila was climbing. The lightning unleashed Lumion, the Spirit guardian. Now, both of them must work together to restore balance to the picturesque village.
The lightning also bestored her with electrifying powers which will aid her on the adventure. Through the journey, Lila will make friends with electric spirits called Kibblins and use her powers to illuminate the village.
The Spirit and the Mouse challenge gamers to listen to the villager’s new electric problem (you may need to get a new pair of headphones), run after Kibblins, and use them to fix the electric problems that suddenly came upon the village. Completing the quests will help Lila “put Lumion back in the sky where he belongs!” Since its release last year, the reviews of the game have been very positive.
How long is The Spirit and the Mouse?
A single playthrough of The Spirit and the Mouse is about 5 hours—about the same length as Stray. This is arguably a short experience but enough to clear your head when you have died a lot in an action-adventure AAA game.
