When it comes to romance, the The Witcher series doesn’t hold back! But the experience is usually short-lived to the displeasure of some gamers, a problem that the developer intends to fix with the launch of the next installment which will have Ciri as the main protagonist.
The model of making players choose between A or B when it comes to romance—which was the case in The Witcher 3—took the sting out of the experience. For some, it felt like the developer inserted it there as fillers.

In a recent interview with CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 4 game director, Sebastian Kalemba, and executive producer, Małgorzata Mitręga, the studio revealed that the goal of The Witcher 4 is to deliver a more meaningful romance rather than having it as an afterthought.
“It’s a part of the way we make games,” said Kalemba. “It is a part of human nature. It’s a very normal thing. Without that I think we wouldn’t be able to tell the very full story.”
“We want to pay a lot of attention to it and make it super compelling and very meaningful. So, it’s not just to make a romance for the sake of making a romance. That’s not the CDPR way.”
In The Witcher 3 which was released a decade ago, players can romance a few characters. Ciri who served as a supporting character in The Wild Hunt also experienced a romantic stint.
The Witcher 4 was revealed at the December 12 The Game Awards. Fans of the franchise were treated to a 6-minute cinematic trailer that showed Ciri fighting the Bauk, a spider-like looking monster that preys on its victim’s fears. In the interview, Kalemba said monsters are an integral part of The Witcher which, by the way, is a monster-slaying game.
“We pay a lot of attention to everything but [especially] to the monsters,” Kalemba said. “That’s at the center of [a monster slayer’s world], right? And Ciri is a monster slayer. The Bauk is a very special being. It is a deadly monster that’s complex and intelligent.”

Mitręga added that they wanted to show the complexity of the Bauk and players can experience more creatures like that during gameplay. “We want to introduce new monsters, for sure, but of course, there will be a variety of them.”
