In June, we announced that Sumo Group laid off 15% of its workforce and shut down Timbre Games. On Wednesday, September 4, 2024, Timbre CEO Joe Nickolls posted that the studio was back and will now be an indie studio.

Like Tango Gameworks, Timbre Games Has Been ‘Revived From The Dead’

“Some big news to share today. As many of you know, Timbre Games Studio had to close our doors a couple of months ago, but we weren’t quite ready to throw in the towel just yet,”. Nickolls announced on LinkedIn.

“The great people at Sumo Digital Ltd have helped us transition into a fully independent studio and allowed us to take the Timbre Games name and brand with us, and we are very grateful for their help. The support we have received from the gaming community has been nothing short of amazing.”

Along with the Timbre Games co-founder Geoff Coates, Nickolls promised to share more details about the “new leadership team and future of Timbre Games Studio in the months to come”. Timbre Studios will be partnering with Studio Capital Management to handle their business development.

Founded in 2020, Timbre Games was previously a Sumo Group studio located in Vancouver, Canada. When the studio was closed, employees who lost their jobs praised the studio and wished them the best.

What we don’t know yet is whether the talents let go after the studio was shut down would be recalled—that is, for those yet to land new roles. Also, prior to the closure, their focus was on making AAA console and PC games. However, it is hard to tell if they will continue along that line as an indie studio.

A trip down to the company’s website has the words “Watch This Space” boldly written under the company’s logo. We are excited about their revival and wish them the best in their indie journey.
