On Thursday, February 27, 2025, Twitch’s CEO Dan Clancy published an open letter where he talked about the future of the company and changes they plan to make to the platform. While the post was lengthy, what caused the most buzz was the plan to open monetization to most streamers from day one.

On every streaming platform that offers content monetization, streamers are often required to hit a certain threshold (including stream time, watch hours, and follower count) before they are allowed to monetize their content. Twitch’s plan will cause a huge disruption in the industry.

“We want you to be able to take advantage of our monetization tools, whether you’re just getting your community started, or have been on Twitch for a while,” Clancy said and went on to highlight two key changes they plan to make to their monetization feature.

  • “In 2025, we’re excited to open up monetization tools—subscriptions and bits—to most streamers, from day one. This will allow creators, regardless of their status, to grow their communities and start building earnings through direct patronage.

  • We’re also introducing an option, which will allow all streamers to use their earnings on purchases within Twitch.”

The clause “to most streamers” in the comment was likely intentionally inserted to mean that streamers who have violations on their account may still be excluded from the monetization feature.

Interestingly, last week, Twitch also announced an update to their Enforcement System that would see low-severity violations expire in 90 days after which the account will return to good standing if no further violations happen within the period.

Another interesting announcement that Clancy made in the open letter is that they are working to bring more sponsorship opportunities to creators including “features like Sponsored Subscriptions and Channel Skins”.

Twitch is also exploring new types of sponsorships including expanding the matching gift subscriptions features that was part of SUBtember and Bonus Round through sponsorships. There are so many more features outlined and you can see all of them here.

If all of the intended changes come to fruition, it will be a game-changer for small streamers, especially those desperate to make a living. Perhaps, it may help draw more users to the platform.
