Last week, a Bloomberg report claimed Ubisoft and Tencent were in talks with advisers about taking the company private. The company’s spokesperson has allegedly confirmed the report to VGC, claiming it was part of its strategic review.
“Ubisoft has noted recent press speculation regarding potential interests around the Company,” a spokesperson said. “It regularly reviews all its strategic options in the interest of stakeholders and will inform the market if and when appropriate.”

“The Company reiterates that management is currently focused on executing its strategy, centered on two core verticals – Open World Adventures and GaaS-native experiences.”
Last week’s report led to the soaring of the company’s share price by nearly 40% compared to the previous week. Ubisoft’s share price has lost nearly half of its value this year. The company’s share price fell to nearly 11-year low after the announcement that Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be delayed until February 2025.
According to last week’s report by Bloomberg, several options are being considered to turn the company’s fortune. However, talks are still in the early stages with nothing cast in stone yet. There is also no guarantee that the decision from the discussions will be implemented.
Earlier in September, a minority investor, AJ-Investments which owns around 1% of Ubisoft shares wrote an open letter where they accused the Guillemot family of blocking attempts to sell the company.
The investors demanded strategic and structural changes which should involve either taking the company private or stepping aside of the Guillemot family from their management role followed by the appointment of more credible hands to run the affairs of the company.
This is coming at a time when the public perception of Ubisoft has tanked. Gamers are increasingly becoming worried about the declining quality of Ubisoft games as well as the controversial representation of facts, like in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
